The Anniversary

Because of the approaching tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, there were several documentaries on the subject on TV recently. I recorded them on our DVR so that I could watch them later. My two sons, 10yrs and 9yrs old, caught part of one of the shows showing the Pentagon after it was hit by one of the planes. They were glued to the television as I explained to them what happened. It was getting late so I sent them off to bed but not before they pleaded  to see the rest of the show. I told them that I would think about it as I escorted them off to bed.

Their desire to watch the shows and to know what happened on that day got me thinking. Are they old enough to watch the disturbing images and video footage? Are they old enough to understand the gravity of what happened and how it has changed the world? They do need to know what happened. The will not learn about it or the truth about it in school.

I think that the video and images from that day should be shown on television every year so people will not forget and new generations will learn about it.

My son was just over a month old that terrible morning. I think I was in my daughter's room getting her ready for school and her TV just  happened to be turned to FOX news channel. I believe we had just gotten cable TV that week. I was glued to the TV for days afterward.

Like Perl Harbor was a big event in my parent's life, this event is very significant in mine. And I pray to God that my kids don't have a similar event in their lives.
