When I was a kid, my siblings and I loved to look at the cereal box while we ate breakfast. Back then, there wasn't much interesting on the box except for the ingredients, vitamins, and maybe a picture of a star athlete. My parents didn't buy the sugar cereals that had the cool boxes so we were limited in our reading fun, yet we somehow found it interesting. We always hoped that we would get the sugar puffs, Fruit Loops or Trix cereal one day.
(fast forward about 35 years)
I know it is not very healthy, but my wife and I on occasion will purchase several of the sugar cereals that have the fun boxes when they are on sale. Now my kids love to look at and "read" what is on the outside of those boxes. When there is nothing interesting on the box of cereal that they are eating, they rummage through the cabinet and find a box that peaks their interest. And like my siblings and I did way back when, my kids will fight over who gets to look at the box. They also use the boxes to block the other kids from looking at them, sometimes making a wall with several.
It is funny how kids will take interest in the same things their parents did when they were kids. I don't know how my kids started with the cereal boxes, but I haven't done it since I was a kid. Maybe they saw it on a TV show. Who knows?
