Grocery Shopping

In the ads the other day, there were some pretty good deals at three different grocery stores. Not wanting to pass up a good deal, we mapped out our course, loaded up the girls in the van and off we went.

The first store we went to was WalMart. The one in the town we live also has groceries. I can't remember what the sale was, but we spend a little time there. Unfortunately, we can't seem to get out of Walmart for under $100. We always end up getting a few things we really don't need and can't really afford. So, through the checkout line we went, out to the van and we were off to our next destination.

This stop was Safeway for meat on sale. My wife had purchased some at a good price the day before so she wanted to get some more. Just inside the West entrance, they have an area with tables and chairs for people to sit with their laptops to connect to their wifi hotspot.

I wish I had a laptop that could do wifi. Then I could feel like a somebody sitting at the coffee shop writing my next novel and blogging. I just wish I had a laptop.

I digress.

So there we are, in the second of are stops on the list. I have to admit that grocery shopping is not on the top of my list of things I enjoy doing. In fact, it is towards the bottom. I started looking around at the people that were shopping at Safeway. I quickly came to the realization that my wife and I seemed to be the youngest shoppers in the store. Just about all were noticeably older.

Then I thought about the age range of shoppers at Walmart. There, I saw all ages of shoppers. Children, teens, young adults, adults, elderly, they ran the whole gambit. But here at Safeway, the range was more on the "older" end.

When we lived in a big city, I never really paid much attention about the demographic of the shoppers. I just wanted to get in and out. Kind of like sex...just kidding. Really, I am just kidding!

Ok, so after my wife found all the things she wanted at Safeway, we again loaded up our purchases and the girls and off we went to our third and final destination, Basha's.

Basha's is a grocery store chain that in only in Arizona I think. We don't shop there very often though. But today, there were a few sale items that we wanted. As with Safeway, I decided to look around and observe the other customers. Again they tended to be older and either women or couples. Not many lone men shopping because men hate grocery shopping. I guess lone male grocery shoppers probably tend to be single which makes the grocery store, not Walmart, an easy place to find single men.

I guess that Walmart is too fast and furious for the elderly people in this town. That's not to say that they don't go to Walmart, but for serious, power grocery shopping, it seems they prefer the slow and easy pace of regular grocery stores like Safeway and Basha's.
