Toys for Tots?

The other day while at a local thrift store, I bought a pair of childrens walkie talkies thinking that my two sons would have a lot of fun with them.

Well, my "good idea" turned into a "bad idea". A trip to the store for a pair of new batteries for their new toys, got them excited. They already know about walkie talkies, having seen us use the FRS radios at Disneyland and talking from car to car. So, they were excited about talking to each other.

No sooner had I got new batteries in them, they were off and "talking" to eacher. They didn't know to push the button to talk, so I thought I could show them how and they would be having the fun I thought they would. Well, for my 2.75 yr old and 3.75 year old sons, this proved to be difficult.

After getting frustrated with them for not being able to get the concept, I gave that up. They continued to talk without pressing the button and then they just threw them down and played with other toys.

I guess my younger brother and I were older when we had ours. I keep trying to get toys that are more advanced for their age or their comprehension. You would think that after being at this for a while, I would know better.

I just hope that I don't make the opposite mistake when they are older and get them something that is below there age and comprehension and they think worse of me.
